It’s a horror story featuring the "undefeatable monster" trope, but the monster this time is an undocumented species of giant human-eating snail. I guess Highsmith loved snails so much she had to have nightmares about them.

He shut his eyes tight and opened his mouth, crying but not crying in a way he had learned through practice also. With his mouth open, his throat tight, not breathing for nearly a minute, he could somehow get the satisfaction of crying, screaming even, without anybody knowing it.

The first story (The Snail-Watcher) is more than gross, but the second one (The Birds Poised to Fly) is actually lovely and delicate. Now I don’t know what to expect for the rest.
