A New York Times analysis of Spotify data revealed that our most-played songs often stem from our teenage years, particularly between the ages of 13 and 16.

又:

Survey research from European streaming service Deezer indicates that music discovery peaks at 24.

又:

Ultimately, the Deezer study pinpoints 31 as the age when musical tastes start to stagnate.

People stress about not having time to read—a fair complaint, but one that has a different tone when the subtext (or text!) is “I’m getting behind.” Behind on what, and to whom? Who is served by all this stress, by reading challenges and goals and lists and shelfies and book hauls? What is it for? What are we getting out of it? What difference does it make if you read a book that came out last week or one that came out last century?

This is also my problem with a bunch of social-reading sites (like Goodreads, StoryGraph, and Hardcover), which keep pushing you to set a goal for how many books you wanna read every year and month. Then, at the end of the year, they tell you how many pages you've read, supposedly to make you feel good or bad about it. I just don’t see the point.

#TIL:

Japan retains capital punishment for its most serious crimes, like multiple murders. Those convicted typically remain on death row for years, or even decades. The death penalty is conducted by hanging.

If I ever implement a Discuss (小組) app for LʌvDB, it would be a Tildes clone. I might even steal the ~ sign. But most likely I will use &.

#豆瓣竞品 probably need a better tag for pinning this kind of apps.

Hardcover.app is yet another competitor to Goodreads (or #豆瓣竞品). I am simply aghast at how much money has been spent on building such a product (which is over $11,000/year!). In contrast, LʌvDB cost less than €15 for 200 days, with €8 being due to misconfiguration, likely avoidable.

Of course, the comparison is unfair, as I am not trying to fill the database with as much data as possible (which costs Hardcover at least $260 per month), and we have yet to open up registration (which I might never do).

#TIL that even on a Mac, you can enable GPU support for JAX. I haven't tested the performance yet, but the installation is smooth enough, especially compared to installing JAX on our Linux servers.

Found this collection of Python Markdown extensions tonight. What a treasure! I've spent 4 hours replacing some shitty custom code with it and it's still not done. The Block plugins are very cool, but it needs more work than just plugging in. #Python #Django

This went somewhat viral earlier today in the Chinese Twitter sphere. In the video, a girl calls a cat's name. Some heard "Mimi" (or "Timi"), while others heard "Gulu." I heard "Mimi" earlier this morning, but now I hear "Gulu" and can't switch back. Unlike that famous dress, I could never switch between blue-black and gold-white.

I also want to have more music in my life, and my own way of achieving it right now is by going through lists such as The Observer's 50 Albums That Changed Music, Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, or 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. It should be noted that these lists are too "white" and too "western," but they are some good starting points.

#Python has already reached version 3.12, yet earlier this year, I still received complaints about using features from Python 3.9 that are not available in earlier versions.

While there aren’t many details on the movie itself, Nintendo says that it will be co-financed by itself and Sony, with Nintendo footing more than 50 percent of the bill.

I don't see how this is going to work.

Watching ads so that creators get paid is the right thing to do, yet I DON'T WANT TO WATCH THEM. Now, the solution is to load the ads but skip them in 50 ms. Everyone is happy. Let the advertisers cry. #BrowserExtension

In "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," there is a scene where Blomkvist tracks down the widow of a tourist couple who took photos related to the case in 1966. Although it's fiction, I'm still amazed that a photo, along with its negative film, can be preserved for such a long time. I don't have many photos from my past, as I have a habit of constantly deleting my history. Most of the photos on my phone have been deleted, and the few printed ones were cut into pieces before being either trashed or burned. Nonetheless, inspired by the sentiment from this article and the book, I recently purchased a Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo in the hope that it will help preserve some traces of my past for a bit longer. Perhaps it's not the best idea, though, because now I find it even easier to delete the printed photos from my phone. #consumerism

Didn't finished reading the whole piece as the second half is full of religion reference. But the first part is quite good, especially this quote:

Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away.

It's completely understandable that #Discogs wants to increase its profits, but harming its clients in the process seems unwise. In related news, #Letterboxd just sold for $50 million. Perhaps that's what Discogs is trying to do: boost profits and then sell for another $50 million. Can't we have a nice place to discuss movies and music anymore? Is there even a good way to operate this kind of business? Perhaps it shouldn't be a business at all; maybe it should be a nonprofit, like Wikipedia.
